PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new shielding mechanism for welding part of a canister, capable of preventing exposure during welding by surely shielding radiation leaking from the gap of canister lid. SOLUTION: In a shielding mechanism for shielding an annular welding part L between a canister body containing spent nuclear fuel S and a disk shape canister lid 3 fit in it, a ring shape shield member 5 positioned above the annular welding part L and a turning means 6 for turning the shield member 5 along the welding part are provided. By this, the gap between the canister lid 3 and the canister body 1 is welded in a state which is covered with the shield member 5 and so the radiation leaking from the gap is surely shielded, so as to prevent exposure during welding.
