Compositions for oxidation dyeing of keratinic fibers, based on developer-coupler combinations, comprise 2-hydroxy-5-aminobiphenyl derivatives (I) as developers, provided that (I) have no center of inversion. Compositions for oxidation dyeing of keratinic fibers, based on developer-coupler combinations, comprise 2-hydroxy-5-aminobiphenyl derivatives of formula (I) or their water-soluble salts as developers, provided that (I) have no center of inversion. R1 = H, halo, 1-4C (hydroxy)alkyl or 1-4C (hydroxy)alkoxy; R2-R6 = H, halo, CN, OH, 1-4C (hydroxy)alkoxy, 1-6C alkyl, 1-4C alkylthio, SH, NO2, NH2, (di)alkylamino, CF3, CHO, COMe, COCF3, SiMe3, 1-4C hydroxyalkyl, 3-4C dihydroxyalkyl, CH=CHR7, (CH2)pCOOR8, (CH2)pR9, C(R10)=NR11 or CH(R12)NR13R14, or two adjacent R2-R6 groups may form an OCH2O bridge; p = 1-4; R7 = H, OH, NO2, NH2, COOR12 or COMe; R8, R10, R13 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R9 = NH2 or CN; R11, R14 = H, OH, 1-4C (hydroxy)alkyl or 3-4C dihydroxyalkyl; R12 = H, NH2 or OH. An Independent claim is also included for compounds (I) with the provisos that: (1) R2 is not H or OH; and (2) when three of R2-R6 are H and one of the remaining R2-R6 groups is H, halogen or 1-6C alkyl, then the other remaining R2-R6 group is not halogen, CN, OH, 1-4C alkoxy, 1-4C alkylthio, NO2, NH2, alkylamino, dialkylamino or CF3.
