The antenna system has two antennas for a read-write device (SLG) for data transmission between the read write device and a mobile data storage device (MDS) in an identification system with at least one mobile data storage device attached to objects for detecting conditions and/or process data relevant to the object e.g. in a postage, transport and/or preparation system of the individual objects. At least one receiver (1) is provided for making a weighted combination of received signals from the antenna (2) to form a summed received signal for obtaining a directional characteristic of the antenna system. Independent claims also cover a method for operating the system.
