The access control system is to control access to buildings, areas of buildings or elevators where the door or gate has a lock system, such that the door can only be opened by authorized personnel. A cordless telephone (2) or mobile telephone is used to identify the person. The telephone cooperates with a receiver (7) on the gate/door, which operates on the same frequency as the telephone and which has at least one non-volatile memory.
