Position sensing apparatus (100) for providing a mutual inductance value corresponding to a position of a movable body (130), relative to a reference position, includes a first electrical coil (102), a second electrical coil (104) adjacent the first electrical coil, and a shielding component (106), disposed between the first and the second coils. The shielding component includes an aperture providing an unimpeded path from the first coil (102) to the second coil (104), such that a cross sectional area of the unimpeded path varies as a function of position of the shielding component (106). Position of the shielding component is a function of the movable body position. The first and second electrical coils are characterized by a mutual inductance value, which is also a function of movable body position . The apparatus may include a drive circuit (108) driving a signal through the first coil, and a detection circuit (112) detecting an induction signal associated with the second coil and producing the position signal as a function of the induction signal. |
