PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively producing a polyphenylene ether by which the activities of the catalyst are continued. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyphenylene ether comprises regulating the rate for blowing air therein so as to be 5-15 NL/min per kg phenylene ether monomer, and the concentration of oxygen in a waste gas so as to be <=15 vol.%, and removing the water formed by the reaction from a polymerization reaction vessel so as to be accompanied with the waste gas in the polymerization of the polyphenylene ether by air oxidation.
