PURPOSE: Disclosed is a method for producing pyrrolidones by which not only the total length of a tubular type reactor used for converting a gamma-hydroxybutyl(alkyl)amide obtained by reacting gamma-butyrolactone with a primary alkylamine, or the like, into the pyrrolidones can remarkably be shortened but also the temperature control of a fluid in the tubular type reactor can readily be achieved and thermal economical efficiency is excellent. CONSTITUTION: A tubular type reactor equipped with plural units of temperature controlling means capable of independently controlling the temperature of a fluid flowing through the interior of the reactor and arranged in the flow direction of the fluid is used and the temperature of the fluid is increased by heating with the temperature controlling means located on the upstream side in the flow direction in the plural units of temperature controlling means to convert 50-98 mol% of gamma-hydroxybutyl(alkyl)amide into pyrrolidones. The temperature of the fluid is then retained with the following residual temperature controlling means to further advance the reaction in a method for converting the gamma- hydroxybutyl(alkyl)amide obtained by reacting gamma-butyrolactone with a primary alkylamine, or the like, into the pyrrolidones using the tubular type reactor.
