PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a smooth magnetic recording medium having very superior electromagnetic transducing characteristics and running durability, retaining high output and ensuring a low error rate. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is obtained by disposing an under layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder on a nonmagnetic base and one or more magnetic layers containing a ferromagnetic metal powder having 0.01-0.10μm average major axis size and 80-180Åcrystallite size or a ferromagnetic hexagonal ferrite powder having 5-40 nm average plate diameter and a binder on the under layer, the thickness of the magnetic layers is 0.01-0.5μm and a polyester resin having a diphenylmethane skeleton and a polar group and/or a polyurethane resin obtained from the polyester resin is contained as the binder in the magnetic layers.
