PURPOSE: An electric power steering system is provided to monitor the angle position of a steering assembly from an output of a motor position by counting the output change of a motor position detecting means and by resetting a count every time when an index signal to indicate that a steering assembly position corresponds to the straight advance position of a vehicle is generated. CONSTITUTION: An output signal from a motor position sensor (9) is combined with the number of Hall effect sensors or an index signal from a sensor coupled to a steering column shaft (1) or a rack (6), or an index signal from a yaw sensor or the angle position depending device to generate the accurate measurement of a steering angle for a straight advance position. The output change of the Hall effect sensor is used for driving a counter. The counter is always reset when an index signal is generated and drift is prevented from occurring due to a long time use. An index signal is preferable to correspond to a steering gear in a straight advance position.
