PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems associated with enormous increase in save environment preparation and relocation manpower when replacing a cabinet of a disk array device to one with larger HDU mounted capacity and when wanting to improve the performance by changing an array configuration. SOLUTION: Information about logic configuration and physical location is previously mapped and controlled on a disk controller. Physical position change of HDU leads to remapping. The position information of the HDU mounted under a disk controller is calculated by n-dimensional coordinate system information and individually stored in the HDU. At the time of insertion of the HDU, the HDU information is read. In the case of differing from present coordinate system information, by comparing information before sampling with information after insertion, a data link is restructured. Even if a disk inserting position is changed, a data guarantee is allowed and no backup in array change is required.
