The system for the top surface protection of motor vehicles comprises a tarpaulin cover fitted over the vehicle and which in the region of the wheel arches(RL) is connected to a U-piece(BS) which fits under the wheel arch in the direction of the vehicle's center. The U-piece may fit under the wheel arch in at least three positions or over its whole length. The U-piece is elastically deformed and under spreading tension. At the lower ends of the wheel arches the U-piece is supported to prevent slipping downwards.
