The invention relates to a sewing-machine needle (1) comprising a shank (3) which extends from a butt (2). A thread groove (11) running in the direction of the butt (2) and originating at the eye (8) which lies on the side of the point, is provided on the peripheral surface of said shank. The base (12) of the groove is configured as a curved surface (W) which lies transversally to the shank (3) and the lateral flanks (15) of said groove, which start from the end point of the curved area, form a groove cross-section (16) which extends towards the peripheral surface (4). The aim of the invention is to achieve a robust construction comprising a practical grooved contour for guiding the thread. To achieve this, the diameter (D) of the circular arc contour of the curved surface (W) corresponds approximately to the radius (R) of the shank (3).
