An applicator (17) for applying fluid or paste product (59) to hair or hair-like objects (9) on a surface (82) comprising a handle (3), an application member (45) for holding an amount of product (59) and applying the product (59) to the objects (9), and a shield (36) for covering at least part of the application member (45) to prevent the surface (82) from contacting the application member (45) during usage of the applicator (17), thereby preventing the surface (82) from being contaminated by the product (59). The shield (36) has at least one opening (70) to allow the hair or hair-like objects (9) to reach the product (59) on the application member (45). A product loading system is used to load an amount of product (59) to the application member (45) while leaving the shield (36) substantially free of the product (59). The loading system has a dosage indicator (146) and a level indicator (191) for showing the user how much product (59) is used for an application and how much product (59) is left.
