PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently extinguish a fire source, to simplify cleanup-work after the fire-extinguishment, and to reduce a thermal shock to a floor structure. SOLUTION: When a liquid Na leak-induced fire breaks out, a control unit 22 opens an inert liquid supply valve 10. Then, liquid nitrogen is sent to a jet nozzle 11 via inert liquid supply piping 9 and is sprayed upon the leaked liquid Na layer. The jet nozzle 11 sprays the liquid nitrogen in the form of a liquid drip. The liquid drops of the liquid nitrogen cover the liquid Na layer (a pile of liquid Na layers 5) to put out the fire. The liquid drops thus sprayed deprive the burning liquid Na layer of the heat of vaporization, then vaporizing to form a nitrogen gas and also cooling down the liquid Na layer. The nitrogen gas, then, shuts off oxygen from being supplied to the liquid Na layer. For this reason, even a small amount of insert gas can efficiently extinguish a fire. Such cleanup-work after the fire-extinguishment can be made remarkably simple, because the insert liquid sprayed is released as an insert gas to the outside. Further, since the inert liquid is sprayed in the form of a liquid drop, the thermal shock to a stainless steel liner is mitigated.
