PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for olefin polymerization obtained by using a metallocen based transition metal compound which gives a suitable activity and a high molecular weight polymer and a method for producing olefin polymer using the catalyst. SOLUTION: The catalyst and method are obtained by contacting the following (A) and (B), or contacting (A), (B) and (C). (A): a specific transition metal compound. (B): an aluminum compound obtained by contacting an aluminum compound (b1) represented by formula E3Al (provided that E is a hydrocarbon group and all of E may be mutually the same or different) and a compound having one hydroxyl group in a molecule (b2). (C): an organoaluminum compound represented by formula EaAlZ3-a (provided that E is a hydrocarbon group; Z is hydrogen atom or a halogen atom and all of Z may be mutually the same or different; a is an integer which satisfies 0<a<=3).
