PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder and a recording method in which an image exhibiting excellent reproducibility of thin line, good color tone having no blur on the color boundary, and excellent water fastness is obtained stably with high image quality while suppressing curl of a recording medium and eliminating trouble in the carriage of the recording medium. SOLUTION: When the surface of a specified section from the forward end of a recording medium is coated with preprocessing liquid by a preprocessing liquid coating means of the inventive recorder image recorder, rear surface of the same area is also coated. Since the conditions of sheet state are uniform for the surface and rear at the forward end part of the recording medium, curl due to presence and absence of coating on the surface and rear is suppressed and a coated recording sheet is caught by means of sheet feed rollers or introduced into a sheet retreating passage smoothly in the downstream of the recording medium resulting in jam-free carriage of sheet.
