A method of introducing a required gas into each of a succession of containers advancing along a path to reduce wastage. The required gas is fed into a first container, and any gas displaced from the first container is collected as the required gas is fed thereinto. The displaced gas, which constitutes a mixture of the required gas and the gas previously in the container, is then fed into a following container on the path. The step of collecting the displaced gas and feeding that displaced gas into a following container on the path may be simultaneously performed on a succession of containers on the path. The gas displaced from the last container is exhausted to atmosphere. The gas may be fed into each container at a rate sufficient to cause turbulent mixing of the gases, and monitoring apparatus may be used to control the feeding of gas dependant on the composition of gasses exiting a container. <IMAGE> |
