PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical encoder avoiding the situation such that an angle error is generated in the electrical angle of a lower order signal by the influcence of an assembling error, the sensitivity irregularity of a photodetector, the illumination irregularity of an LED or the like to realize detection of high accuracy and high resolving power. SOLUTION: The irradiation light emitted from the LED 6 is detected by the photodetector 700 through a detection track 5a. A plurality of the cycle signals different in phase outputted from the photodetector 700 are averaged to set off an offset error and a signal amplitude error and these highly accurate detection signals are combined to obtain absolute position data.
