An elevator device capable of eliminating those defects of a conventional traction type elevator device such that, because a hoist device was installed at a pit part under a hoistway, when water flew into the hoistway, the hoist device was submerged and required a replacement, a fully waterproof hoist device had to be prepared to enable reuse even after the hoist device was submerged and an equipment production cost was increased and, in addition, when the hoist device was installed too upward, the service life of a rope was shortened, wherein the hoist device is disposed above the lowest floor surface inside the hoistway to prevent it from being submerged, and a rope passed around a drive sheave of the hoist device is not passed around two or more return wheels on the car side and weight side of the drive sheave, whereby the service life of the hoist rope is assured.
