PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for inexpensively manufacturing a shape memory alloy having excellent properties by using sheets of Ni and Ti while obviating the necessity of many steps and also to provide a shape memory alloy obtained by this manufacturing method. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the shape memory alloy, heat treatment at a temperature not higher than the eutectic point (942 deg.C) of an Ni-Ti alloy is applied to either of the following metal sheets, in the state or after cold rolling: a metal sheet prepared by alternately laminating an Ni sheet and a Ti sheet into >=10 layers in total, integrating them, carrying out pressure bonding by hot rolling to metallically join the respective layers into a multilayer structure; and a metal sheet prepared by laminating again the above metal sheet of multilayer structure into >=10 layers, integrating them, carrying out pressure bonding by hot rolling to metallically join the respective layers into a multilayer structure. The shape memory alloy obtained by this manufacturing method can also be provided.
