PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for detecting a failure of an idle switch are provided to rapidly deal with the failure of the idle switch by easily and rapidly detect a disconnection or a short circuit of the idle switch. CONSTITUTION: An idle switch failure detecting apparatus includes an ignition switch(IG), an idle switch(IDLE), and a throttle opening degree detecting section(10). A control section(20) is connected to output terminals of the switches and the throttle opening degree detecting section(10) to detect a disconnection or a short circuit of the idle switch(IDLE) and to generate a display signal. A display section(30) is connected to an output terminal of the control section(20) to display the disconnection or short circuit of the idle switch(IDLE). The throttle opening degree detecting section(10) includes a throttle position sensor.
