Sorting documents of value

Apparatus for sorting a set of documents having different values, a machine authenticatable identifying material being provided on and/or in each document, the identifying material having a physical property different from the form or shape or location of the material which identifies the document value. The apparatus comprises a detector (3) for detecting the physical property of the identifying material; a sorter (8) means responsive to the output of the detector; and a feed system (1) for feeding documents past the detector to the sorter (8) whereby the sorter (8) responds to the output of the detector to feed the documents to respective locations in accordance with their values as defined by the detected physical properties.
