The invention relates to a system for producing a predeterminable polarization mode dispersion (PMD) comprised of: a first polarization splitter/combiner element, which splits the incoming signal into two signals having polarization directions that are perpendicular to one another; a delay unit, which is arranged in one of the signal lines of both (split) signals, and; a second polarization splitter/combiner element, which combines both split signals once again. The invention is characterized in that for producing a second order polarization mode dispersion, an element is provided, which twists the polarization principal axes, in front of and behind the element, around an appropriate angle with regard to one another, and in that the light signal exiting this element is fed into a system, which is also comprised of a polarization/combiner element, of a delay line and of another polarization/combiner element for combining both signal lines. |
