PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester-based aqueous coating composition which can form a coating film excellent in processibility, especially one suitable for can interior coating. SOLUTION: This coating composition is prepared by neutralizing a mixture mainly comprising (A) a carboxylated polyester resin which is prepared by the esterification of a polyhydric alcohol component containing at least 60 mol% ethylene glycol and a polybasic acid component containing at least 80 mol% aromatic polycarboxylic acid and has a number average mol.wt. of 1,000-20,000 and an acid value of 10-170 mgKOH/g, (B) a water-insoluble epoxy resin, and (C) a hydrophobic solvent, with a neutralizing agent and (D) dispersing or dissolving the neutralized mixture in an aqueous medium.
