PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a softening agent that can impart good softening properties to fabrics, has biodegradability as well as good solubility and dispersibility in water, and shows good workability. SOLUTION: The objective softening agent comprises a compound represented by the following general formula (1) [(wherein R1 is H, methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl or cyclohexyl group; R2 is methyl, ethyl, hydroxyethyl, cyclohexyl or R5OCOR6 or R7NHCOR8; R5 and R7 are each an alkylene group; R6 and R8 are each a hydrocarbon group; X is an anionic atom or an anionic group) and the number of the alkyl groups of R6 and R8 bearing 7-13 carbon atoms is 10-80% in all of the R6 and R8 groups].
