PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform rod connecting work on the ground without carrying out works at elevated level. SOLUTION: A male joint 6a of a lifted lower rod 6 is connected to a female joint 5c of an upper rod 5 in the upper part of a leader 3. A chuck groove 5b of the upper rod 5 is disengaged from a chuck member 4b of a rod rotating drive unit 4. The chuck member 4b is engaged with a chuck groove 6b of the lower rod 6. A joint portion is lowered to the lower part of the leader 3. The lower rod 6 is disengaged from the chuck member 4b, which is engaged with the chuck groove 5b. Connecting pins 13, 13 are inserted into pinholes 8, 8 formed in both joints.
