PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device and an image pickup method by which a signal to noise ratio can be increased even when the level of an external disturbance light changes with time remarkably. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with pixels 1 that receive a light from an image pickup object, a changeover means 2 that switches signal from the pixels synchronously with the contrast of lighting with respect to the image pickup object, a bright state signal storage means 3 that stores a signal from the pixel when the lighting is bright, a dark state signal storage means 4 that stores a signal from the pixel when the lighting is dark, and an output means 5 that outputs the signal stored in the bright state signal storage means or the dark state signal storage means or a signal on the basis of the signal for each prescribed period.
