PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate plural pulses by a simple configuration, and also stabilize operation of a PDP. SOLUTION: In a reset period, a positive polarity rectangular pulse Pya is applied to an electrode Y and also a negative polarity CR pulse Pxa is applied to an electrode X, and a whole screen lighting pulse is applied between the electrodes X and Y. The pulse Pxa is generated by switching off the voltage application before the CR pulse Pxc arrives at the final potential. A whole screen elimination pulse Pxb consisting of a CR pulse of the inverse polarity to the pulse Pxa is applied to the electrode X. The elimination operation is effectively performed by potential adjustment operation by inverting the polarity of the wall charges stored by the whole screen lighting. Electric discharge is generated by applying a potential adjustment pulse Pxc to the electrode X, and the state of the wall charges in the discharge cell is adjusted by the discharge, to form an optimal quantity of the wall charges for address discharge thereafter. The final potential of the pulse Pxc is set to the same value as the voltage (-Vxg) of the address pulse Pa.
