PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a linear actuator which can provide a large propulsive force and assures smooth operation. SOLUTION: A first member 10 is accommodated within a second member 11 consisting of a cylindrical body to freely move with matching of the axial line. The second member 11 is also provided to freely move and seals therein a viscous fluid 26. A plurality of permanent magnets 12a to 12m are also provided in parallel at the external circumference of the first member 10 by respectively changing the polarity direction by 90 degrees, a plurality of electromagnetic coils 13a to 13f accommodated in a coil yoke 33 are also provided in parallel at the internal side of the second member 11 to surround the external circumference of the permanent magnets 12a to 12m, and these coils are magnetized to generate the same polarity at the opposing end surfaces of the adjacent coils. Moreover, a spring 14 is mounted within the second member 11, thereby energizing the first and second members 10, 11 in the direction opposing to the moving direction when the power is supplied to place a nut 19 in contact with a stopper 30.
