<p>The weight of toner remaining at any time in a developer housing (14) of a removable toner cartridge (10) installed in a laser printer (11) is determined by ascertaining the weight of the developer housing (14) with the toner when printing is interrupted through determining the magnitude of a rear reaction force by load cell (20) on the side (18) of the developper housing (14) having the input for rotating a developer roll (55) in the developer housing (14) and then subtracting the weight of the developer housing from the weight of the developer housing with the toner. The weight of the remaining toner is correlated to the determined rear reaction force. Then, the amount of the remaining toner is displayed (96) to a user of the laser printer as a percentage of the initial total toner, either numerically or by a bar graph. The developer housing (14) is slidably received in a cleaner housing (12) of the removable toner cartridge (10) and is releasably connected thereto by a pair of biasing springs (39, 44), which must be at different angles to a line passing through the centers of the developer roll (55) and a photoconductive drum (70), which is rotatably mounted in the housing.</p> |
