A compact manual transaxle (10) includes an input shaft (14) having four fixed input gears (62,66,70,76), a first intermediate shaft (20) rotatably supporting three speed gears (64,68) meshing with three of the input gears, a second intermediate shaft (26) rotatably supporting a pair of speed gears (72,78) meshed with two of the input gears (70,76) and a reverse gear (80) meshed with a speed gear (64) on the first intermediate shaft (20), and a differential (32). One speed gear on each of the intermediate shafts meshes with a common input gear. A transfer gear (46,48) on each intermediate shaft (20,26) is meshed with a final drive gear (42) fixed to the differential (32). The transaxle (10) further includes a pair of synchronizer clutches (82,98) for establishing three forward gears by selectively coupling the three speed gears to the first intermediate shaft (20) and a pair of synchronizer clutches (88,110) for establishing two forward gears and the reverse gear by selectively coupling the speed gears and reverse gear to the second intermediate shaft (26). <IMAGE> |
