PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing (R)-proline in an effective and simply process and at a low cost on an industrial scale. SOLUTION: A method for producing (R)-proline comprising treating (S)- ornithine with a diazotizing agent and a halogenating agent under acidic condition, and subsequently cyclizing the product at <=30 deg.C in the presence of a base. And, a method for producing (R)-proline comprising treating (S)-arginine with a diazotizing agent and a halogenating agent under acidic condition, and subsequently cyclizing the product in the presence of a base.
