Footwear structure and method of forming the same

A footwear structure including an outsole (14) and a separate midsole (10) having interlocking shank portions (24, 52). The outsole (14) has an upward extending arc in the shank area which defines a shank interlock portion (24) on the top surface of the outsole (14). The midsole (10) has a corresponding arc which defines a shank interlock portion (52) on a bottom surface thereof which mates with the arc in the outsole for resisting motion of the midsole (10) relative to the outsole (14) in the case where the midsole (10) is unsecured within the structure to allow for removal of the midsole (10). A rigid shank insert (66) may be provided between the midsole (10) and the outsole (14). The midsole (10) further includes a plurality of cushioning pads (44) on the bottom surface of the midsole (10) which are separated by air channels (42). The air channels (42) extend along the length of the midsole (10) and intersect with a heel cavity (56). A plurality of thru holes (46) are formed in the midsole (14) to extend from the top surface thereof to the air channels (42) in the bottom surface.
