A street lighting lantern comprises a lampholder for supporting a tubular lamp with its axis horizontal, an opaque top canopy of inverted trough shape, two refractor panels mounted below the canopy parallel to and on either side of the lamp for deflecting the light downwards, the panels being so disposed that no light can emerge from the lantern at an angle of 90 degrees or more to the downward vertical, and light reflectors on the inner side of the canopy and so disposed that the reflected light leaves the lantern at an angle of less than 90 degrees to the downward vertical. An auxiliary reflector may be mounted above the lamp so that light leaving the lamp above the horizontal is similarly reflected downwards. The canopy 12 which may be of sheet metal with the inner surfaces 13 of the side walls specularly reflective is closed at the bottom by a transparent cover 19, the sides of which carry refractor panels 24 so placed that no light can leave the lantern above the line joining the lamp 18 to the lower edges of the panels without passing through them. An auxiliary reflector 26 is mounted above the lamp and consists of side portions which reflect the light towards the panels 24 and a central portion reflecting the light generally downwards. |
