PURPOSE: A data compressing apparatus in a digital recording system and a control method thereof are provided to prevent an unnecessary capacity consumption of a storage medium and prolong a lifespan of the storage medium. CONSTITUTION: An image signal processor(1) converts an analog image signal into a digital signal and processes the digital image signal to output image data. An image recording controller(2) compresses and controls the image data from the image signal processor(1). The image recording controller(2) includes a central processing unit, a ROM, a RAM, and a bus. A memory(3) stores a signal or data generated during a compressing operation of the image recording controller(2) in a designated address. A compression image storage section(4) stores the image data compressed by an operation of the image recording controller(2).
