<p>A method of aligning a liquid-crystalline compound in a direction different from the direction of stretching or rubbing. The method is characterized by subjecting a hydroxylated polymeric film to (a) stretching and esterification or (b) esterification and then rubbing and subsequently forming a layer of a liquid-crystalline compound on the film to thereby align the liquid-crystalline compound in a direction different from the stretching direction in the case of (a) or in a direction approximately perpendicular to the rubbed film surface in the case of (b).</p> |
