PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a position of a vehicle of rolling stock without conducting complicated signal transmitting and receiving processes including modulation of signals more precisely than in conventional methods. SOLUTION: Inter-order higher harmonics synchronized with a power supply system power source 10 are supplied between a pair of rails 2, 2' electrically bridged by a vehicle 1, at least either of a voltage of the inter-order harmonics between the rails 2, 2' and a current of the inter-order harmonics communicated in the direction of the vehicle 1 at a supply point (a) is measured, and distance from the supply point (a) to the vehicle 1 is determined based on electric characteristics concerning the inter-order harmonics between the rails 2, 2' based on result of measurement, thereby the position of the vehicle 1 is detected.
