PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve adhesion without impairing the lubricity of a metallic sheet or plated metallic sheet, i.e., to provide a surface-coated metallic sheet having the excellent lubricity and adhesiveness and a method capable of manu facturing such surface-coated metallic sheet with good efficiency. SOLUTION: The surface coated metallic sheet is formed by coating the surface of the metallic sheet or the plated metallic sheet with a film containing phosphate and silicon dioxide. The excellent lubricity and adhesiveness may be exhibited by coating the metallic sheet or the plated metallic sheet with the film having such component composition. The method for manufacturing such surface-coated metallic sheet includes a process step of applying a liquid mixture composed of the phosphate and the silicon dioxide of <=80 nm in average grain size on the surface of the metallic sheet, or the plated metallic sheet, then drying the coating.
