PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To positively and accurately perform position detection of a shift lever. SOLUTION: This controller is provided with a manual valve moved to P, R, and N-D positions by an operation of the shift lever in a first direction and held in the N-D position with respect to an operation of the shift lever in a second direction, a plurality of electric control valves performing settings and shifting control of reverse, neutral and forward ranges, a position detecting device 300 for detecting an operation position of the shift lever, and an electronic control unit ECU for setting a neutral range, when the shift lever is in a neutral position and a forward range, when the shift lever is in the forward range. The position detecting device is composed of an ND switch 303 which detects that the shift lever is positioned in the neutral position, and a D position detector 310 which detects that it is positioned at a forward position. The D position detector 310 is composed of three switches (D1 to D3 switches, 311 to 313).
