PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device capable of satisfactorily performing an AF operation, even in the case the focused state at the present is drastically deviated. SOLUTION: This automatic focusing device is provided with a template matching circuit 7 for extracting outline from the output of an imaging device 2 and detecting the strength and the direction of the outline, and a focusing controller 11 for detecting the level fluctuation of the strength and the direction of the outline detected by the template matching circuit 7 before/after the relative image forming position of the imaging device is changed by a prescribed quantity, and then, estimating the direction of a focal point based on the fluctuation pattern, and a lens 1 is driven based on the direction of the focal point estimated by the focusing controller 11 so as to perform the focusing operation. |
