PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a spindle-shaped calcium carbonate having a small particle diameter and suitably usable as a coating material or a filler for papermaking, or a filler for a polymeric material such as a plastic. SOLUTION: This method for producing the spindle-shaped calcium carbonate having the small particle diameter comprises carrying out a carbonating reaction in a calcium hydroxide suspension containing one or more kinds of metal compounds selected from iron, manganese, copper, barium and strontium or a compound having nitrate radical added thereto. The amount of the metal compounds added can be regulated to control the particle diameter.
