The honeycomb (1) contains a heat accumulator (2) which has a predeterminable column (V) and a surface (O) larger than the surface of an individual cylindrical heat accumulator of the same volume and length (L) equal to the extension (E) of the honeycomb. The honeycomb can have two heat accumulators arranged at the same spacing from each other so that a relatively uniform heat input is achieved over the cross-section of the honeycomb. Independent claim describes method for operating honeycomb where exhaust is guided once in the preferred flow direction (15) along the heat accumulator and then deflected in the opposite flow direction for heat contact against the heat accumulator.
