PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To smoothly move a valve element for adjusting a fuel flow rate without being hindered by fluid pressure, and to secure safety at abnormality occurring time in a high pressure fuel supply pump used for a common rail system. SOLUTION: This high pressure fuel supply pump for forcibly sending fuel to a common rail for storing high pressure fuel, comprises a fuel forcibly sending means 4 for forcibly sending the fuel and a fuel quantity adjusting means 3 for adjusting an oil quantity of the fuel flowing in a compression space 21. The fuel quantity adjusting means 3 is provided with fuel passages 31a and 31b for introducing the fuel pumped out of a fuel tank to the compression space 21 and a throttle valve 32 being arranged in the middle of the fuel passages 31a and 31b and changing the fuel quantity of the fuel passing by changing the cross-sectional area of the fuel passages 31a and 31b. The throttle valve 32 is slid in the almost right-angled direction to the flowing direction of the fuel flowing in the fuel passages 31a and 31b.
