PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a microorganism capable of degrading aromatic compounds and capable of making the wastewater treatment, etc., of the aromatic compounds effective at a low treating cost and to provide a method for degrading the aromatic compounds using the microorganism. SOLUTION: A microorganism of the genus Rhodococcus capable of degrading and assimilating the aromatic compounds as a carbon source, e.g. Rhodococcus sp. X6 (FERM P-17835) is used and brought into contact with a solution containing the aromatic compounds to degrade the aromatic compounds.
