PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To require a method by which a lightweight and high-strength microbial carrier can be produced at a low cost because there is a present situation in which the purification of rivers, lakes and marshes and seas is not easily promoted for the reasons of the necessity cited for large purification equipment and excessively large equipment investment and there is further the necessity for using a large amount of the microbial carrier in the purification equipment, raising the purifying capacity and reducing the equipment cost though many problems about wastewater treatment have recently been taken up. SOLUTION: An inexpensive raw material should initially be selected in order to produce the inexpensive microbial carrier. Two items of the effective utilization of volcanic eruptions present in a large amount in Kagoshima Prefecture or Hokkaido, Japan and recycling and utilization of expanded polystyrene which is a waste are grasped and studied to succeed in producing the inexpensive microbial carrier.
