PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain a magnetic recording medium having high coercive force, low noise and high resolution. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium formed by successively depositing at least a non-magnetic layer, a magnetic layer and a protective layer on a non-magnetic substrate, the non-magnetic layer contains N. When the non-magnetic layer is constituted of a non-magnetic base layer and a non- magnetic intermediate layer consisting essentially of Co and Cr, the non- magnetic base layer contains N. When the non-magnetic base layer is constituted of a first non-magnetic base layer consisting essentially of Ni and Al and a second non-magnetic base layer formed on the first non-magnetic base layer and consisting essentially of Cr, the first non-magnetic base layer contains N.
