PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To bring an optical disk device in a short time to a state in which the device can perform recording and reproducing operations at the time of performing the recording and/or the reproducing of information on a plurality of kinds of optical disks whose recording density are different. SOLUTION: Various control conditions needed for recording and reproducing operations are stored into an EEPROM(electrically erasable and programmable ROM) as to both of a single-density CD-RW(compact disc rewritable) and a double-density CD-RW. At the time of performing the start-up processing of the device, a control part 4 instantly discriminates whether a CD-RW 100 performing recording and reproducing operations is the single-density CD-RW or the double-density CD-RW from the pattern of the synchronizing signal SYNC of an ATIP(absolute time in pregroove) wobble signal supplied from an ATIP decoder 27 and sets the operating parameters of individual parts of the device by reading out control conditions corresponding to the discrimination result from the EEPROM 7.
