Polypeptides are provided that include a haemoglobin alpha chain wherein the C-terminal hydrophobic domain has been biotinylated or iodised, and compositions containing them. The peptides may be used in medicaments or pharmaceutical compositions to regulate the stem cell cycle to treat cancer, myeloproliferative diseases, myelodysplasia, aplastic anaemia, immune deficiency, ageing, other hyper- or hypo-proliferative diseases and pain.
