A self-chilling beverage container (10) contains pressurized beverage together with a cartridge (32) containing a refrigerant such as carbon dioxide. A cartridge holder (42) holds the cartridge (32) in place by engaging the inside of the container (10). A cartridge piercer is positioned between the cartridge (32) and the container end (20). When the container (10) is filled and the end (20) installed, the pressurized beverage releases part of its gas, which increases gas pressure within the container. The increasing gas pressure deflects the container ends, which are resilient. The released beverage gas also arms and lengthens the cartridge piercer to engage substantially under the deflected container end (20). When the container pressure is released, the cartridge piercer pierces the cartridge (32) to release the carbon dioxide therein to chill the beverage container (10) and its contents.
