PURPOSE: An active matrix liquid crystal display is provided to improve aperture ratio of an in-plane switching mode liquid crystal display while maintaining high viewing angle characteristic. CONSTITUTION: An active matrix liquid crystal display includes a pair of substrates(41) having liquid crystal interposed between them, a plurality of gate lines formed on one substrate, and a plurality of source lines(51) intersecting the gate lines. The liquid crystal display further includes a thin film transistor formed at a portion adjacent to each of the intersections of the gate lines and the source lines, a pixel electrode(54) driven by the thin film transistor, and a common electrode(53) for applying lateral electric field to the liquid crystal in cooperation with the pixel electrode. The common electrode is isolated from the gate lines using insulating layers(56,57). The gate lines are formed on the common electrode, and the pixel electrode is formed on the gate lines having an insulating layer formed between the pixel electrode and the gate lines.
